At Image Concepts, we’re not easily surprised when it comes to the latest internet marketing developments, but there are plenty of surprising statistics out there which are worthy of a mention. Here are five of our favorite internet marketing facts.

The fastest growing social media demographic is the over-55s

According to Twitter’s own research, the largest recent gains in social media use come from the more mature end of the marketing spectrum (http://www.forbes.com/sites/tjmccue/2013/01/29/twitter-ranked-fastest-growing-social-platform-in-the-world/). In fact, in 2012 there was a 112% spike in active usage among these ‘silver surfers’ – equivalent to tens of millions of people.

User attention span is now at around eight seconds

It’s a well-worn newspaper story that people have been shown to have a shorter attention span than goldfish. According to data from the Associated Press, the current figure stands at around 8.25 seconds – actually 0.75 seconds under the average goldfish. However, this reflects how quickly users jump from one thought to another, rather than simple stupidity (we hope).

Internet videos are bigger than TV (in marketing terms)

Again, this is one of those facts that isn’t that surprising once you think about it. A study endorsed by Google shows that internet video marketing is far more likely to reach users than TV, especially in relation to the prime marketing battleground of the 18 to 34-year-old bracket. So in case you were wondering where to commit your marketing funding, take a look for yourself (https://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/articles/youtube-insights-stats-data-trends-vol6.html).

Over a fifth of the internet population use Twitter

In the same Forbes article about Twitter’s biggest new demographic, we hear that around ‘21% of the global internet population now use Twitter actively on a monthly basis.’ This statistic is from some time ago, so it could well have surpassed a quarter by now.

Marketing has changed more in recent years than it did in the past half-century

According to a survey taken from 1,000 professional marketing agencies across the US, in a study supported by Adobe, marketing has changed more in the past two years than it did in the previous 50 (http://wwwimages.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/solutions/digital-marketing/pdfs/adobe-digital-distress-survey.pdf).

This final statistic is certainly no surprise to our team of SEO professionals. If you want to find out how we can help improve the presentation, or raise the profile, of your business, don’t hesitate to get in touch today.
